What happens during a treatment?

During the first session, a medical history, including information of any medications taken, and a physical assessment is carried out, so that a Chinese diagnosis and treatment may then be performed. Physical assessment includes a blood pressure reading and Chinese diagnosis of the tongue and pulses on each wrist.

Areas of the body may also be examined and/or palpated to form a complete diagnosis. The person then lies on a therapy couch so that the treatment may be performed.

As the needles are inserted, the person’s qi is accessed. This is experienced as a dull ache, tingling or dragging type of sensation. People usually report that a feeling of pleasant relaxation follows this. The needles may stay in place for 20 to 30 minutes, or are inserted and then removed immediately.

Moxa, from the leaves of the common mugwort herb (Artemisia vulgaris), may be applied to the skin during a session, or indirectly via an acupuncture needle or moxa stick. This healing herb is very helpful in warming and stimulating Qi where appropriate. People often report that it is a very pleasant and relaxing experience.

Cupping is sometimes used as an adjunct treatment with acupuncture, and is useful in moving and warming Qi. By briefly inserting a flame inside the cup, a vacuum is created as the cup is placed on the skin, to bring about a suction effect.

If appropriate, treatment may also include some advice on recommended lifestyle, diet and exercise changes.

How many sessions are needed?

Subsequent sessions seek to build on previous ones, in order to help bring about a person’s optimum state of health. Many people gain significant relief after one or two sessions. However, the number required will vary, depending on factors such as the type of problem, how long the person has had symptoms, and how they wish for acupuncture to help them.

Many people choose to have ongoing acupuncture treatment on a regular basis, as part of a lifestyle commitment towards achieving and maintaining their best possible state of health. As people enjoy increasing levels of health and wellbeing, they find that this has a positive knock-on effect to all aspects of their lives.
